The Medical Center remaining in District 8 is the first concrete decision to come out of...

A view of a quiet Wurzbach Road in the South Texas Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, April 6, 2020.The Medical Center and some surrounding neighborhoods will remain in City Council District 8 after Councilman Manny Pelaez’s representative said she wasn’t willing to lose it and accused neighboring District 7 appointees of trying to capture an economic driver for Councilwoman Ana Sandoval’s district.

Frances Gonzalez, a District 7 appointee to the committee, said it’s inaccurate to think splitting up the Medical Center area is political or illegal. , and it’s growing — it contains the booming Northwest Side from the Medical Center to La Cantera and the University of Texas at San Antonio. The district needs to lose population in redistricting.

The redistricting advisory committee is made up of citizens appointed by City Council members. Their task is to draw new district lines to account for population changes seen in the 2020 Census, a process that only happens once every decade. “It also allows politics into this room — something we all committed we would not allow to happen based on our guiding principles,” Garza said.

Rebecca Viagran, former District 3 councilwoman who sits on the redistricting committee, agreed with Kastely. She also voted against keeping the Medical Center in District 8.
