Environmentalists say nuclear power's risks outweigh benefits.Saskatchewan's push to build small nuclear reactors in the province is drawing mixed reactions from academics and environmental groups, with some touting the clean energy potential while others say it's a threat to human safety.
Hussein said that if governments want to move away from coal-fired energy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, they need to add nuclear power to their arsenal of clean energy sources alongside wind, solar and hydro.Canada releases plan for a 40 per cent cut in carbon emissions by 2030 Four more would follow in Saskatchewan, with the first slated for 2034. A site has not been selected, according to SaskPower minister Don Morgan. The strategic plan included a list of economic benefits over the lifetime of the five plants, including a $17-billion direct and indirect impact on GDP and thousands of spin-off jobs.
"It's just kind of fanciful, kind of dreaming in Technicolor," said Dave Geary, a researcher and writer with Clean Green Saskatchewan after reviewing the plan.Geary said the governments' economic projections are likely unrealistic given the infancy of the SMR market. Ann Coxworth, a nuclear chemist and member of the Saskatchewan Environmental Society, agreed with Geary that the SMRs are still in the development stage.
Human are a more dangerous threat to human.
Where does get their numbers? They can't obviously both be right.
Go Saskatchewan, finally a province with a premier that isn't retarded
There is nothing clean about nuclear waste
lazy journalism
This is an opinion piece more than an actual news article lol
Do it. Build it. Build a fuck load of them
Are we really learning nothing?
Nothing screams European excess more than nuclear power in it’s invention, exploitation and history in warfare. Nuclear power demands of every other eukaryote going forward, the sequestration of dangerous garbage for 70,000 years. Who thinks such extortion is being reasonable?
Leave it to the CBC to write such an unbalanced article that includes many patently false statements and, in the end, simply stokes fear, uncertainty and doubt.
elonmusk thoughts?
Why is it that there is a plan to build 'small' nuclear reactors but no plan to deal with the spent nuclear waste? Today there are 6 nuclear reactors operating in Canada. This plan could result in hundreds of nuclear reactors deployed throughout the country, increasing risk.
There’s some degree of risk in everything but if we’re serious about green energy, nuclear is the way to go.
Wouldn’t solar and wind power do well in Sask.?
Why is the headline both-sidesing this when the evidence is clear that nuclear is incredibly safe?
We must do what's best for Premier Moe and his friends/backers. As long as there is $$$ in it for them, I'm cool with getting brain cancer and possibly growing five extra testicles.
It’s both. It’s a huge risk with terrible ecological and human consequences, even if you’re just talking about the uranium mining, let alone meltdown. And so is climatechange. cdnpoli
