Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan has said that people still need to be careful when it comes to wearing face masks. He said the advice is for people to keep wearing them on public transport, however it won't be mandatory |

The leaders of the three Government parties yesterday backed the recommendation from the National Public Health Emergency Team's to end mandatory mask wearing. If, as expected agreement is reached at the Cabinet, the changes would take effect from 28 February.

Physical distancing measures in schools, such as pods or 'bubbles', would also end next week and testing and tracing would be scaled back. "It's especially important in our schools ... it'd be very welcome for your younger children, particularly, not to have to wear a mask. So I think it's good news."

WEF alert!

The effects of masking are reduced the fewer people are wearing them in a space. So making masks 'advisory', rather than mandatory, on public transport is the government's way of telling those of us with pre-existing conditions that we're no longer welcome on public transport.
