Despite efforts by the private sector to reduce cancer mortality in Nigeria through the Cancer Health Fund (CHF), indigents Nigerians continue to suffer

and die from the disease due to high cost of treatment. LEADERSHIP Friday learnt that the private organisations which came together to form the CHF have so far set aside N1 billion for treatment of indigent cancer patients across the country.

Meanwhile, LEADERSHIP Friday findings revealed that funds from the Cancer Health Fund are already being disbursed to cancer patients, with about 100 of them already accessing the fund. A source who disclosed this to LEADERSHIP Friday said, “They will be given a wallet on their mobile phone, they can go to any of the six national hospitals offering cancer treatment and get access to care. Each of these patients, depending on what cancer stage they are in, will be getting N1 million to N5 million.

They therefore, stressed the need for governments at all levels to address the huge deficit in the number of functional cancer treatment centres and the number of oncologists in the country. The managing director/CEO, JNC International Limited, Clare Omatseye said an estimated 79,000 cancer deaths occur annually in Nigeria with 125,000 new cases being diagnosed.
