The Irish Hospital Consultants Association says growing waiting lists, pandemic disruption and recruitment issues are leading to a ‘rapid increase’ in Inflammatory Bowel Disease, with 17,000 patients currently on waiting lists to see a Gastroenterologist

The Irish Hospital Consultants Association has warned of a "rapid increase" in Inflammatory Bowel Disease, due to growing waiting lists for treatment. With timely interventions key to diagnosing and treating inflammatory bowel disease, the IHCA says delays are worsening long-term outcomes and impacting quality of life for thousands of people.

The Association is calling for a concerted drive to hire additional consultants and says the Government must quickly address issues around pay and working conditions. "Many of us who work in the care of patients with stomach and bowel problems and liver disease were re-allocated in the first wave of the pandemic to treat patients with Covid," Dr Egan said.

I am lucky as I have private health insurance and had my bowel examination done speedily and expertly. This waiting list and the waiting lists for spina bifida children and other waiting lists for urgently required examinations are scandalous and a disgrace.

You were told this would happen two years ago. It's too late now RTE to be distancing yourself from something you were singing from the sidelines for. Take off your cheerleader skirt and get back in your box.
