Commentary: Alaskans, get a grip on your dogs

People recreate on the Chester Creek trail at Westchester Lagoon on Thursday, April 9, 2020. Call it a bad case of the grumpy Januarys or just pent-up frustration, but I’m sitting down, doing the intertwined finger stretch, and finally typing out my outlier’s perspective. If you don’t care to know my opinion about Alaskans and our dogs, I suggest you stop reading here.

I don’t mind dogs, inherently. But since I can’t pet, cuddle, or otherwise be near them without getting asthma, I don’t have a particular affinity for them, either. What I have observed about many Alaskans and our relationship with their dogs:Many treat their dogs like their children — I don’t actually think this isn’t inherently bad because to each their own, but it gets obnoxious when combined with other factors because it can blind owners to their dog’s behavior.

Dog crap lining the trail up Lazy Mountain. Nothing like a good snow melt to reveal a winter’s worth of owners not picking up after their dog, even when it poops right next to or even on the trail. The fragrance come breakup is even better. This is also an issue with well-trafficked backpacking and camping routes.

Again, the barking. There’s one particular neighbors’ set of dogs that are the only reason I’ve considered leaving what is otherwise a great neighborhood. The incessant barking — my husband and I have a fan that we turn on even in the middle of the winter for white noise when we are trying to sleep. Yes, we’ve tried talking to them about it.

Please walk you dogs on leashes, a while ago our neighbors dog got into a dog fight because they weren’t on a leash and my neighbors dog was in its yard with a shock collar. It was a whole fiasco GirlBoss

I get angry when I am walking my dog on it’s leash and some have theirs off leash with the leash in their hands. Of course their dog tries to come over a start barking at mine. If you can’t follow the rules, walk your dog somewhere else!

I am a dog/animal lover and agree with you that it’s irresponsible owners, not dogs, who are the real issue. It irks me to no end seeing people walking their dog while holding the leash-which is not connected to the dog-in their hands. Keep your dog leashed and pick up its poop!

thank you, the butte was turds the whole way up and down last week.

As someone that has raised not only Dogs, but a variety of large creatures over the decades, including Camels, I always believed it irresponsible to allow an animal under your care to be without a leash ( unless they are confined in a pen ) in public accessible areas

About 1/3 are OMG I HAVE JUST MET YOU AND I LOVE YOU -- the rest go full Cujo.

Opinion: This should read Anchoragites, get a grip on your dogs. This is a city folk issue.

Alaskans are SO karenish about dogs 😂 Have to wonder if their day is as ruined when they see a pile of moose poop as they are when they see dog poop.
