Brisbane, Gold Coast the COVID danger zone as capital prepares for worst

in what is the state’s deadliest day of the pandemic, with as many lives lost to coronavirus in 24 hours as the total before the recent wave.

Chief Health Officer John Gerrard described the jump in people hospitalised with the virus in the 24-hours to Sunday night — from 670 to 702 — as significant, with 47 requiring intensive care and 15 of those on ventilators. “We are expecting Gold Coast to peak sometime in the next week or so and Brisbane will follow shortly thereafter,” he said, after previously highlighting that Queensland’s decentralised nature meant the timing of peaks would vary across the state.
