Minister for Education Norma Foley, Chief Clinical Officer at Health Service Executive Dr Colm Henry and officials from the departments of Education and of Health met representatives from school management bodies and staff trade unions this morning to discuss the reopening of schools in the new year.
The Irish National Teachers' Organisation said it set out the need for a detailed review of the past first term, and also called for the reintroduction of significant public health supports in schools. The union said public health officials have agreed to review supports for primary schools, including addressing reporting mechanisms and response times in the case of outbreaks in these schools.
The parties have also agreed to meet again during the holidays prior to the scheduled reopening of schools on 6 January. The departments and public health authorities have also agreed to a renewed public health awareness campaign aimed at parents.Schools will close today for the Christmas break.
