Queensland Chief Health Officer John Gerrard said the state’s COVID-19 cases were doubling every day, with most new cases the more contagious omicron variant.

Queensland has recorded its highest daily COVID-19 figures since the start of the pandemic as the government warned there would be “thousands” of cases by next month., the reopening of borders with NSW and Victoria last week in time for Christmas has resulted in an inevitable surge in cases.

Dr Gerrard said he expected Queensland cases to double every two days, and that they would be in the thousands in the new year. “Currently, all of those close contacts go into quarantine for 14 days, which can have a dramatic impact, as you’ll understand, on operations and on businesses,” he said. Queensland’s 86 new cases was the highest since March last year when 78 daily cases were recorded in the first wave of the pandemic.Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll said there had been more than 225,000 applications for border passes from hotspots,People are still turning up to the Queensland border without proper passes or the required PCR test.
