Nearly 700 people have been deemed close contacts after attending a nightclub in Newcastle last Wednesday night, as Queensland reopens its border to quarantine-free travel for vaccinated travellers from NSW.The Queensland border reopened to NSW at 2am AEDT on Monday.There were 74,997 tests in the 24-hour period to 8pm on Monday night. The number of coronavirus patients in NSW hospitals has risen to 171. Of those, 24 are in intensive care.
All 680 people who used the QR code to check in to the venue from 9pm on December 8 to 3am on December 9 are considered close contacts and must get tested and isolate for seven days. Queensland Police Acting Chief Superintendent Rhys Wildman said there was only a maximum delay of 20 minutes for motorists on the M1 Pacific Motorway into the state on Monday morning, “which is usually our biggest challenge”, and traffic was “pretty much flowing freely” elsewhere.
“States do need to stay calm and carry on and not overreact to this [Omicron] variant because it’s not the first and it won’t be the last that we face,” he said.
