The latest figures were released by the Department of Health on Sunday. COVID19Ireland

A total of 5,156 new Covid-19 cases have been confirmed in Ireland, while 503 people are currently being treated for the virus in hospital.It comes after Minister Michael McGrath claimed Ireland's new restrictions will be removed "quite quickly" if the Omicron variant is less dangerous than initially feared.

Minister McGrath added that if Omicron "does not meet our worst fears" then restrictions will be removed "quite quickly". "We are coming into the Christmas period where inevitably there will be more socialisation, we will all want to meet with the people we love, our families and our friends and so on.
