11 Black female founders who've raised more than $25 million in funding share the books that helped them navigate the VC landscape

Knight's company, which is still in beta mode, recently closed a $4 million seed round led by the venture-capital firm LocalGlobe and the fund Speedinvest. Other angel investors included the Giphy founder Alex Chung and ClassPass' CEO, Fritz Lanman.

From the start, Knight said, Espinal's book breaks down what the fundraising journey looks like from an investor's perspective and gives insight to the founder on how to navigate conversations, what the seed process is, and how it's different from other rounds. "The best advice I received before going into the first investor meeting was to be yourself," Knight said."Many people are focused on trying to sell their idea and end up in sales mode. They forget they are having a conversation with other people.": Finding Your Way Through the Hardest and Most Crucial Part of Any Bold Venture" by Scott Belsky.

This book was"instrumental to understanding how to set up our organization and build a strong foundation that we could present to investors," she said. The Seventh Ave cofounder added that her company launched last year. The book"provided deep clarity — and accountability — as we built out our team, product, pitch, and business model from scratch," she said.
