The number of people in hospital who have tested positive for the disease is 543, down eight since yesterday. Of these, 97 are receiving treatment in intensive care, an increase of eight overnight.

Earlier today, Health Service Executive CEO Paul Reid said hospitalisations have increased by 20% in the last week and warned that the health system alone cannot find a way out of the current wave of Covid-19.

Mr Reid said RSV is leading to hospitalisations, while other seasonal viruses are also having an impact, with many emergency departments seeing presentations up 20% on pre-pandemic figures.Mr Reid said increased resources have been put in place, with 11,000 extra staff and 900 more hospital beds, but the surge continues to stretch the system.

While there were 34 outbreaks reported in schools last week, this included 32 outbreaks reported late from May and June."We can turn this around, boosters will help and third vaccines for immunocompromised are helping, but there is a timeframe, particularly over the next few weeks, [where] the actions we take will have a huge benefit."

He said 4,400 healthcare workers are currently absent due to Covid-19, impacting frontline nursing services.

Under 4 per cent of bed capacity with covid. Our health service at breaking point. Is Paul Reid or any of his management accountable

'And as in any competitive sport, playing a long drawn out defensive game against an unpredictable, fast-moving, adaptable and unrelenting opponent is asking for trouble.'

Covid-19: 3,578 new cases and 83 in ICUThe Department of Health has been notified of 3,578 additional cases of Covid-19. The number of patients in ICU with Covid-19 is 83, an increase of five on the same time yesterday. Everyone deserves to be there Close the labs!! Surely the only logical step is a return to proper level 5 and 2km rule while we contain delta, then by February or so we would have cases down and we could give the hospitals and frontline workers a deserved break

As it happened - NPHET reports 2,975 new Covid-19 casesDr Ronan Glynn said the core message still to parents is that any child with any symptoms needs to stay at home and get a test. He said the key thing for parents is that antigen testing should not be used as a green light test if children have symptoms. | This is a national disgrace. ALL recipients of vaccines have waning protection as time goes on, down to 55% at 5 months. So Irish public ‘Health’ are saying that 5 months after the initial jab people won’t necessarily get their protection? WTF? Germany, France are doing them NOW. Doesn't matter what they say about boosters a majority of 60-69s can't have theirs until late Dec/early Jan due to the slow rollout of our first AZ vaccine. Hardly our fault and we are not going to be staying home waiting yet again. Life is way too short. NPHET and speaking when they get it right and stop scaremongering I'll start listening to them.
