Advocates and medical practitioners have stressed the need for better support for palliative care across NSW, as the Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill re-enters State Parliament on Friday.
More than $82 million over four years was announced in the latest state budget for end-of-life care. Last month, a review panel’s recommendation to reopen Westmead Hospital’s palliative care unit after more than a decade was accepted, but no timeframe or funding has been announced. “When the language is ‘you’re going to die a horrible death without [VAD]’ – that language is unfair”.
Professor Clarke said there was a need to plug gaps with “patchy availability of services and doctors” through more consultative services and care in or near home settings.
