Bendigo's biggest hospital is to trial body cameras on its security workers, as staff find themselves dealing with increasing physical and verbal abuse from patients. The trial has been prompted by an increase in verbal and physical aggression from patients. The month-long trial comes as staff at Bendigo Health, particularly paramedics and those in the emergency department, encounter more threatening incidents where security guards are being called on for help.
The test is a collaboration between the central Victorian hospital and Spotless, the security contractor. "Unfortunately, we're subjected in the emergency department to abuse on a regular basis. Much of that is verbal abuse, and that can be just as cutting in the long term for staff and have just as much effect if not more than physical abuse," said the emergency department's director Dr Simon Smith.
He said the hospital is yet to determine exactly how the vision will be used, but it is likely to lead to improvements."If ever needed to, we can go back to that footage, to further understand what happened at that time. "It's possible the footage could be used for education and showing people what patients look like when they're drug-affected and abuse staff. Maybe there'll be other possibilities; we can use it to do some behavioural modification."Ambulance Victoria Loddon Mallee Area manager Tim Fraser said staff are fed up with issues around violence and aggression — and he is hopeful the cameras will make a difference.
