Boozing at home during the Covid-19 pandemic is “a silent killer” because it is causing a soar in liver disease, a hospital professor has warned.There has been a dramatic increase of 30% in the past 18 months, according to the research by Beaumont, which investigated cases like irreversible diseases such as cirrhosis of the liver.

He said: “Everyone knew about the apprehension at the start of lockdown and lots of people took to drinking maybe a glass of wine a day. He also warned that as many as half of all excessive drinkers who have cirrhosis of the liver may return “normal” liver test results in GP examinations. “Results are often normal until you fall off your perch or the edge, where you become yellow in the eyes or jaundiced.
