Days after finishing treatment I felt what I convinced myself was a new lump in the same breast that I’d had cancer, and I had a complete breakdown. My doctor had waved me off saying “see you in a year.” Two weeks later, I was back.
When an unknown number calls my phone, my heart skips a beat, even if I’m not waiting on any kind of scan result or information. It’s PTSD from all of the bad news I’d been given through phone calls over the last year. But something I wish I’d been told is that you can be grateful that you’re cancer free, and still be angry and upset that it even happened to you in the first place. You can wish that being cancer free isn’t something you have to celebrate. It doesn’t make you ungrateful.
