A sore tummy in the morning before school can be a sign of anxiety in children — a symptom that they might be struggling to cope.

“It’s really a fundamental cultural shift in the way we think about mental health. And it’s very different from adult mental health,” said Professor Oberklaid, who is also a paediatrician at Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital. The new national children’s mental health and wellbeing strategy wants the focus shifted from treating children’s mental health only when it’s poor to addressing it on a continuum.“We know that proper support can improve long-term outcomes and can help children achieve their full potential in life,” he said. “This strategy shows us how, and will be crucial to our current ongoing reform of the mental health and suicide prevention system.
