When it comes to COVID-19 vaccinations, Brisbane West is leading the charge, but some Queensland regions are falling behind — and an infectious disease expert warns it is not a question of if, but when, the Delta strain spills into the state.
Logan, Beaudesert and Ipswich in the state's south-east are not far ahead, with less than 63 per cent receiving their first dose. "These regions that have low vaccination rates will get left behind and they will suffer the consequences of having lots of COVID and sadly many deaths from COVID."Professor McBryde said consequences might include a health system unable to cope in regional areas.
"It's really disturbing to see that four hospitals in north Queensland have all said they're full and beyond capacity and this is before COVID hits."It comes after Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk launched a campaign to encourage communities that had low vaccination rates to roll up their sleeves. If non-vaccinated people are clustered together in one region, they could be at risk of the severe consequences of COVID.
