The National Hockey League has even mandated a suspension process for unvaccinated players who don’t comply with coronavirus protocols — excluding exemptions for medical reasons, religious beliefs or the probability that COVID\u002D19 arose through employment or a quarantine as a high\u002Drisk close contact.

The B.C. Ministry of Health could threaten the return of more COVID-19 restrictions as cases spike amid an aggressive fourth wave fuelled by the Delta variant. It would be a stark reminder that the pandemic is not a temporary problem and that a return to normalcy this fall is much more fiction than fact.

For fully vaccinated players who contract COVID-19, the league’s collective bargaining agreement will deem their absence a hockey-related injury without a financial penalty. “If you choose on religious grounds with hospitals that employ you, that’s fine. We’ll find an administrative job for you, or you need to find another job, but you’re not working in the intensive care unit.”

“What happened was two things,” stressed Dr. Conway. “As a society, we forgot there was COVID. So when we decided to reopen in July, people took that as a full-on, no-holes-barred reopening. And at that time, we were vaccinating 600,000 Canadians a day now it’s barely 100,000, despite 2.5 million Canadians waiting for their second shot and nine million awaiting a first shot.
