Opinion: It is not possible to eradicate COVID-19, nor is it possible to keep it out of Australia. That's why it's time we started talking about a taboo topic: death

It is not possible to eradicate COVID-19 from the globe, nor is it possible to keep it out of Australia. We need to start talking about the likely outcomes of COVID-19 circulating in the community. We need to start talking about accepting death as an outcome of disease.

There is no solution that will not entail deaths. It may be deaths from COVID-19, or deaths of young women who could not access breast cancer screening. Or patients with brain aneurysms that sustain a stroke, or die from the aneurysm rupturing. Or patients with colon cancer who could not access treatment when the disease could have been cured at a younger age. These are just some examples.

COVID-19 needs to be thought of as endemic, and not as a pandemic. It is very likely COVID-19 will lead to a significant increase in deaths – it is not the flu or a common cold. It might be there is a 10 per cent or even 20 per cent increase in the number of deaths per year. Of note, however, is that we had only 37 deaths from influenza last year and none this year, so the outcome may eventually be even.

Australia has been lucky because of our geographical isolation, but we have been educated to be afraid of death from COVID-19, and not accepting of the fact that patients will die from this disease. The average survival after one is admitted to a nursing home is less than 12 months, so it is not surprising people in their eighties who are living in a nursing home might die from COVID-19.

A taboo topic? A said to my daugther (who doesn't speak English) 'You are only young but you...? And she knew thanks to AC/DC. Weren't they from Sydney? Hells Bells!

Tik tok tik tok

E vabbe'... chi un minimo mi segue sa che parlo di accettare la morte da un pezzo, da quando avevo l'altro profilo (sempre felino). Inizio a sentirmi meno solo.

More die from the common cold each year than covid

When was the last time someone died of polio, smallpox, TB in Australia? The Covid vaccine strategy needs to aim high as happened with these deadly diseases. Anything less is just defeatist

Bravo ⭐️

Any article minimising deaths from COVID19 is appalling, anyone can die from it. My Mum has lived safely in agedcare for over three years, thanks to our SA gov that does everything possible to keep the virus out. We can see doctors and get screening for that reason! auspol

Happy to talk about your death from Covid, but I’d much prefer to delay all discussion of mine and of those that I love. Thank you!

If NSW can’t do it, then t can’t be done. Utter rubbish. Even now they could squash it if they wanted to. If you want to live free of COVID, move to another state. I have family and friends lining up to move to Queensland.

Imagine if it was the rich & privileged who were going to lose their lives to Covid when we’re forced to open up soon? Nasty opinion pieces like this wouldn’t be published Instead it’s people with chronic illness & disabilities that are going to die so their lives don’t matter😡

This is disgusting. No one should have to be sacrificed so the rich can make more money. My daughter & I both have chronic medical conditions that make us vulnerable to Covid. Why do our lives mean nothing Shame on you for publishing this nasty propaganda 🤬

Each country has its own fate. For AUS, as long as it keeps exporting iron ore, LNG, coal, wine etc, life is fine. Don’t quite get it the government is so excited for reopening. The delta COVID will be just a COVID after full vaccination and we see AUS did well in COVID.

But I heard there's a vaccine for that!

Typically Australian thinking dumb and dumber

Never visit these 10 Countries in 2021 😱🧐

COVID-19 vaccines profits in 2021 Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, Moderna, AstraZeneca

GladysB Resign immediately

Yes, people will die. However, rather than reckless abandonment when 70-80% vaxed, safeguards need to be put in place to prevent unnecessary ones. Some doctors become insensitive to death. Always a worry when this happens.

How about talking about another taboo subject: early treatment that would save lives and give people hope.

Can we offer up our federal liberal pollies, NSW liberal pollies and pretend journalists instead of family members

If politicians really expect us to accept 'living with COVID' when can we expect an end to all the hand-wringing about deaths at the daily news conferences? These deaths appear mostly to be of the elderly (with 'underlying medical conditions') or unvaccinated ('lifestyle choice')

My opinion. Tasmania. We eradicated it. We kept it out. Our economy is booming. What are you talking about?
