A TOTAL of 400,892 new cases of coronavirus disease 2019 and 5,559 deaths were reported in the month of August 2021 alone as the highly infectious Delta variant swept the country. The 400,892 new cases recorded in August were 38 percent higher than the 290,172 reported in the month of April 2021, when the Alpha and Beta variants also swept the National Capital Region Plus and the rest of Luzon.

DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire, in a press conference earlier Tuesday, said the Philippines has not seen the epidemic peak yet. The case count is usually low on Tuesdays because these are based on testing output on Sunday, when several laboratories close for the weekend. The new cases brought the cumulative case count in the Philippines to 1,989,857. There were 172 duplicates that were removed from the tally.
