Warning of the pressure on younger Australians from months of lockdown, government MPs pushed on Tuesday for new mental health programs and named the $61.4 million-a-year chaplaincy scheme as a leading candidate for greater federal support. covid19 a...

School chaplains would gain more federal funding to help young students through the pandemic under a proposal from Coalition MPs to extend what Prime Minister Scott Morrison called a signature government program.

since its introduction by the Howard government. An amended version continued under Labor, and it was redesigned again under Tony Abbott after two High Court challenges over the scope of the federal government’s executive and constitutional power to fund religious guidance. “The plea was to provide greater funding – he spoke about how this is a welcome program, particularly in state schools, but that we need to consider full funding for every school to have a chaplain,” said a Coalition spokesman who confirmed the debate but did not name the MPs involved.

He did not promise more funding or an extension of the scheme but said the suggestion from the backbench was “interesting”.

Ah! There it is! Here I was wondering if these ‘ordinary mums’ behind the ShadowPandemicVic could be the same ones who screamed bloody murder at the idea of protecting the MH of trans kids in schools. So it’s about pushing their religion into schools. My cynicism wins again.

Chaplains? Really, chaplains? Not counsellors or psychologists whose job it is to support mental health, but chaplains?

This govt knows how to waste money

Money would be better spent on actual psychologists.

All well and good but what kids need is the opportunity to be at school. Not just for the obvious academic reasons but all the other reasons it’s healthy. At least give the kids this basic freedom.

Just stop lockdowns and open borders instead of pouring millions into mental health programs...

How abysmal.

NO

Seriously?

Or we could get actual psychologist and counsellor access for kids. If people need chaplains they can go to their place of worship.

Yes that should solve the mental health issue

Chaplains are not clinicians. When we talk suitably qualified mental health workforce who can effectively work in schools .. OT’s, SWs, psychologists and mental health nurses. These professionals are deemed qualified to provide MH interventions at graduation.

Too late guys, the horse has bolted and you can’t catch it…. If you had an once of compassion or empathy the kids would be back at school and the young ones in the playground

Are you kidding me? They don’t need more chaplains they need to be out of house arrest after 212 days! Maybe something like - and bear with this crazy suggestion - fresh air, exercise, real life interaction with friends & community?

The schools need Psychologists and trained counsellors NOT Chaplains!

NO chaplains!!! Proper Counsellors with no religious affiliations!

Or you could save the 60 mill and open the State. This is lunacy and death by a thousand cuts.

Why not just end the term a week early for this year. These kids will get nothing out of the last two weeks.

Why do they think throwing money at it fixes issues? Try allowing people and kids to regain some resemblance of a normal life. Money won't do anything at all

That's is the last thing children need.

Yeah......God. Right. Ffs

Can you please name the party in the title?

Kids need professionals not god squad!

Keep the chaplains in their churches. Put proper counselling into schools, and increase the number of mental health first aiders in the school system.

🤦‍♀️ employ therapists not chaplains

School chaplains is not the answer to mental health problems. Psychologists and/or increased Medicare access to bulk-billed visits would overwhelmingly be the preferred and natural option. Fund medicare properly. Don’t waste taxpayer money creating new programs. auspol

Chaplains? Because we need to increase the chances of the children being molested to achieve what, exactly?

You are making the same mistakes we made in Italy in 2020, closing people at home is equivalent to multiplying infections

School chaplaincy are useless with mental health!!! Total waist of time! Seeking help from a psychologist was far more effective and helpful if you can get one!!!!

The Lord will help 🤣🤣

+ Oh, here we go. This will trigger people.
