Two members of the committee steering the HSC through COVID-19 have broken ranks to reveal it was health officials rather than educators who decided to delay examinations until early November, and the option of cancelling some exams was based on health advice that has now changed.
However, many of those principals run schools in the north and east. In Sydney’s west and south-west, where case numbers are higher, schools may not reopen as early. The committee - which includes the heads of the public and Catholic sectors, a Teachers Federation representative and NESA chair Peter Shergold - was also told no students in other cohorts could be on-site while an HSC exam was in progress.
However, Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant changed her advice at a meeting this week, and multiple sources - who would not comment publicly due to the sensitivity of the matter - said the view of many on the committee was now shifting towards running the full complement of HSC exams.Advice from Dr Chant that other students could be on site during exams “changes things a lot,” they said.
JordsBaker Can anyone explain to me why an earlier call to cancel those whole lot was never an option? Dragging this period of intense stress for kids seems to really challenge any chance of getting their best results.
