New Zealand recorded 83 new cases of COVID-19 in the 24 hours to 8pm last night as the outbreak grows to 511.

"Right now, the experts are telling us to take on Delta differently, but they've also told us to stick with the elimination strategy for now. In their view, it's not only possible, it remains the best strategy - and I totally agree," she said.

"No one wants to use lockdowns forever, and I can tell you now that is not our intention as we have new tools for managing COVID and we will use them. But for now, while we vaccinate, elimination is the goal, and we can do it." There are currently seven epidemiologically-linked subclusters identified within this outbreak. The two largest clusters are the Birkdale Social Network cluster associated with Case A , and the Mangere church cluster .
