The HSE chief said the impact of Covid restrictions on peoples physical and mental health will lead to the health system coming under significant pressure

Taoiseach Micheal Martin announced this week that the government had decided to stall the easing of restrictions as Covid case numbers in Ireland continues to rise.Speaking at a press briefing on Friday, HSE chief Paul Reid was asked if he believes Ireland will still have restrictions in place throughout winter despite having over 90% of the population vaccinated.

“Where we’re at right now in terms of hospital and health care is extremely busy, high levels of demand with the impacts of the previous three waves and also a cyber attack. Mr Reid said a number of Covid patients have a "disproportionate impact" on the health system and said the effect would worsen with the more cases we see.

“So, there’s a kind of an important point where we go beyond the numbers that we’re at or into 500 people in hospital or more than, you know, 100 people in ICU are important risk factors on our health system but ultimately decisions for government."
