💉Comedy is, perhaps, a strange side hustle for someone whose day job is literally putting people to sleep. As a registrar anaesthetist Dr Ed Patrick is, he says, “essentially a glorified drug dispenser - you make people unconscious”.

When Ed Patrick goes to parties he sometimes finds himself zoning out on the chit-chat and involuntarily sizing people up for possible intubation. How difficult would it be, he thinks, when people open their mouths to laugh at his jokes, to get a ventilator down that throat? Or occasionally, in the days when he used to go on dates, he would find himself giving the woman he was with a score - not on their looks, but their Mallampati score.
