In an interview with Sunday Agenda, the Institute's Director of Epidemiology, Professor Jodie McVernon, revealed the"parallel" work was going on because the original National Cabinet plan envisaged low or minimal transmission for the country to be opened up at 70 and 80 per cent vaccination rates.
Her comments indicate that the future of the country coming out of COVID-19 hinges on how well the NSW and Victorian governments can succeed on keeping COVID-19 numbers down ahead of reaching a 80 per cent double vaccination rate in October or November. "This ongoing piece to understand how moving from a high caseload environment through vaccination and how that can help to support the easing of public health measures is a really important parallel piece of work and we are working closely with our colleague James Wood at University of NSW who's leading that body of work."
The public would clearly also have to get used to COVID-19 deaths and Professor McVernon said it would be difficult for Western Australia Premier Mark McGowan to continue with his policy of zero COVID. The Doherty Institute modelling controversially found that whether children were vaccinated or not would not make a difference to the overall COVID picture.

aclennell I somewhat agree with this. It will depend on future mutations. Vaccine WON'T stop the infection rate, but it will help against serious illness/death & the strain on hospitals/ICU. Australia will be required to keep the vaccinations & booster shots up for years to come for all.
