It will also outline personal experiences and coping strategies that helped in mitigating the impact of the pandemic. Mental health issues and coping skills have emerged as key areas that needs more attention as we continue to co-exist with thepandemic and this is even more pertinent when it comes to young people. It is evident that most young people across the world have faced many challenges during the past year and a half.

The Human Sciences Research Council responded to addressing the impact of COVID- 19 among the youth by partnering with several institutions including the Department of Science and Innovation , the United Nations Population Fund and Higher Health to conduct an online survey exploring youth specific issues due to the outbreak of the pandemic

. Mental Health issues and coping skills was one of the key issues explored in the survey. The findings from the survey showed that more than half the respondents reported having some form of mental distress during the lockdown period. Mental distress also disproportionately affected younger students when compared to those who were older and had better coping skills and support networks.Daphney Mathlodi Mokagane, a spry 25 year old female.
