A West Cork priest with incurable cancer has paid an emotional online tribute to his parishioners following the official announcement of his retirement

Fr Gerald Galvin has served as parish priest of Durrus, Ahakista and Kilcrohane since 2009 - the most remote parish in the Diocese of Cork & Ross.

He recalled many events that occurred during his 12 years serving in Muintir Bháire; the joys of communions, confirmations, weddings, baptisms, alongside the sorrow of funerals and the heartbreak of people's deaths. "Fear, anger, resentment, self-pity, pain and much more are gone. They are replaced with hope and with love."

"I now want to apologise to those people whom I disappointed, upset, or let down in any way. I hope that someday you can forgive me for my failures or for any hurt I may have caused you," he said.
