On Tuesday, government minister Charlie McConalogue asked churches to follow the public health advice and to hold off on hosting the ceremonies. It added that “the format of such ceremonies should be adapted appropriately, as was the case in many parishes last year, with shorter, simpler and smaller ceremonies, which were nonetheless reverent and joyous”.

“This is perplexing, as no such prohibitions are applied to other events, such as sporting or civic events, or other family occasions, such as the celebration of birthdays and anniversaries, or indeed to weddings or funerals. #Open journalism No news is bad news Support The Journal Your contributions will help us continue to deliver the stories that are important to youEarlier this week Mr McConalogue urged the Church and the public to hold off on the sacraments.“Like many people in the country, I have very strong memories myself of both communion and confirmation, and it’s a very important day in everyone’s lives.

They could just have them in Croke Park? Or is that not allowed?

I want to say I am vaccinated and I live with my mum and she is vaccinated and I pray it works but I get the feeling we are into this for the rest of our lives. I am old enough to say ok but if I were young no, nah, noway. We cannot allow big pharma punch juice in our arm yearly

It's fantastic folks don't be naysayers, parents know well enough how to protect their children, churches are HUGE their is plenty of space for everyone and children's immune systems can fight this naturally and make them stronger not weaker and dependent on a vaccine for life

Oh, okay, cool. As long as he is prepared to pay the bill for any outbreaks this may cause. They paid up in relation to all other cases where they abused their power so this should be fine.

Good on them it’s not their fault out Government and the HSE can’t get their act together avd have a health service that is fit for purpose

Good their job is to bestow sacraments on those who wish to receive them, they are not responsible for after parties, all churches are adhering to health guidlines, any celebrations held in a public resturant setting are also operating to health guidlines,so what's the hoo haa

Up The Bishops 💪😀

Isn't that illegal? Do they think they are above the law.....Still? Deluded, elitist, nonsense spouting dinosaurs!

Archbishops have no more sway in Ireland..their time is over..get them out of society

Butbutbut why are people turning away from religion?

So why wait? Is there no common sense anymore. The problem is no much the church ceremony as it is the ridiculous ott mini wedding-afters families seem to think are necessary after these things. I have two children due for communion and confirmation this year. I won’t consent for it to happen in breach of public health guidelines.

Legal experts call for clarity on relationship between NPHET and governmentA report said the public health team became the “de facto decision maker” rather than simply an adviser to government. Good cop bad cop!!! The lines have been blurred for far too long, I think some people have almost seen NPHET as our actual government at times and have blindly followed them or people have been irate at them thinking they are in charge, and MM, leaky and Co have sat back and let it happen
