A high amount of COVID-19 cases concentrated in the 20-39 age bracket has led NSW Health to urge the state’s youth to get vaccinated, declaring “this is about you, your friends, and your community”.

NSW Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant on Monday said the younger populations in the hotspots in Sydney’s southwest were the “driver” of the vaccination effort given their likelihood to still attend work and other high-risk locations.

“This outbreak in south-western Sydney has been largely a very young demographic which reflects the fact that the majority of people are staying at home but those that have to work in those essential industries are going out and they tend to be younger,” she said. It comes as the Doherty Institute report, which underpinned National Cabinet’s roadmap out of COVID-19, pointed to Australia’s youth population as the “peak spreaders” of coronavirus.

“In this case it's really the 20-29 years that are peak spreaders. They will bring COVID to their children and to their parents,” Professor McVernon said.
