French pharmaceutical giant Sanofi will buy Massachusetts-based Translate Bio, an mRNA therapeutics firm, in an effort to “unlock the potential of mRNA,” the company said Tuesday, a month after it announced an almost $500 billion annual investment into the technology underpinning the highly successful Covid-19 vaccines made by Pfizer and Moderna.
Paul Hudson, Sanofi’s chief executive, said the acquisition would allow it to ramp up existing projects and explore “additional opportunities in the fast-evolving” space. “Our goal is to unlock the potential of mRNA in other strategic areas such as immunology, oncology, and rare diseases in addition to vaccines,” Hudson said.
