Anti-AstraZenecism was not academic freedom. It was academic dishonesty. And it has undermined the national rollout and confidence in a very good vaccine in a way that will now cost lives in our community, writes nick_coatsworth | OPINION

The Australian community is confused about COVID-19. While still at the top of the ladder relative to international standards by most measures one could think of, we have lost confidence in ourselves as COVID-19 world leaders.

This problem emerged almost immediately during the first wave. Armed with webcams and with journalists hungry for information, a handful of academics marked themselves out for their propensity to overstate the devastation likely to be wrought by the pandemic in Australia. At first, those views and those of governments were broadly similar, evidenced by the huge volumes of PPE and ventilator stockpiling. We were terrified, and rightly so.

Examples of alarmist concerns are many and varied, ranging from “faecal aerosolisation” of COVID-19 at the SCG cricket test through to exaggerated interpretation of potential spread at almost every point in the outbreak. For some governments, that has now meant a symbiosis of sorts where they are lauded by the Zoom professors or indeed institutes that validate state policy positions. For a single government – that is, NSW – it has meant public opprobrium at the hands of these same experts.

So how do we deal with this issue as a community? If we stop listening to experts, won’t that create even more confusion and distrust? The media needs to help us here by being more critical of us experts when we step outside our swim lanes. As experts, we need to avoid positioning ourselves behind different policy positions. And the open criticism of our political leaders and policymakers should be cause for a consumer of media to switch off.

nick_coatsworth You can only have confidence and trust in the medical advice if the TRUTH is told. If 'leader' wanted to hedge his bets and made sure we were truly covered he would have bought a selection of vaxcines for each and every one of us a few times over; eg Canada. Dont blame ATAGI!

nick_coatsworth The mainstream media caused vaccination hesitancy by catastrocising the minimal blood clotting risk with Astra Zeneca because ... that’s what you all do .... spread fear. Shame on you all.

nick_coatsworth What a gutless wonder is Coatsworth, covers 'academic dishonesty' with a foul spray but won't name his detractors. Accurate history of the covid pandemic will not shine a kind light on federal medical officers. And what the hell is Anti-AstraZenecism❓ ps. TV ad is v. droll

nick_coatsworth The same Nick, mate of Porter ,who said children can’t catch covid or that it wasn’t airborne? All this support of the Morrison Gov’t is transparently angling for Liberal preselection. Nice of Costello newspapers to help him.

nick_coatsworth Not sure one can blanket blame “academics”. Politicians and the CHO make policy. Academics advise. That works well in Victoria.

nick_coatsworth Is Coatsworth the current deputy chief medical officer as this opinion piece claims? Because the Department of Health seems to think that Prof Michael Kidd has that role. Seems like an article alleging other people claim false expertise would get this right.

nick_coatsworth Yeah, nah. Feds have stuffed up vaccine rollout.

nick_coatsworth Not sure it’s the media’s experts causing the confusion over AZ. ATAGI came out said no one under 50 then revised to under 60 should use . Dr Young came out and said she wouldn’t recommend any one under 40 take AZ. Now the NSW government says people under 40 should get it.

nick_coatsworth Costello Media busy avoiding public interest journalism again. The Age isn't what it used to be thisisnotjounalism

nick_coatsworth A big difference between UK and Au AZ take up is because the UK media refused to run scare pieces every time an adverse side effect was reported unlike...

nick_coatsworth “Anti-AstraZenecism” … excuse me?

nick_coatsworth Please advise whether you received an AZ shot or Pfizer? I’ve had AZ.

nick_coatsworth Att:The Age: Both sides of the argument should be considered & respected. This piece is obviously skewed to Liberal Government’s stance as it is written by an ex CHO. Another respected academic could contradict Nick Coatesworth & call him out for his failures! Wake up Australia!

nick_coatsworth TV News offer panic then compliantly parrot LNP like it’s perfect scientific truth. Where’s the SCREAMING they would do to Labor over this absolute chaos & blame? The TV applauds the punishment of Sydney Labor electorates rather than get underway to remove this Fed & NSW Gov

nick_coatsworth A vaccine that is so ‘very good’ it’s been officially banned by half of Europe 🙄

nick_coatsworth Maybe, maybe not

nick_coatsworth Dishonest or just of a different political persuasion. Did they not understand the potential consequences. Who wins from undermining the vaccination roll out

nick_coatsworth Good piece. Now follow through and stop profiling the zealots he’s referring to. We don’t need hot takes from them - we’ve had their nonsense for a year and a half and it’s cost lives. Enough.

nick_coatsworth Thank you for an article by an expert who is not self serving.

nick_coatsworth Naive take on consumer sentiment and who/what influences it. Would be a good idea to have a more holistic understanding to address the issues...

nick_coatsworth Someone’s looking for a safe seat pre-selection.

nick_coatsworth

nick_coatsworth Sorry - don't trust anything from Coatsworth. Especially when it comes to defending decisions he was instrumental in making.

nick_coatsworth Shut up NIck.

nick_coatsworth Propelled by the media especially abcnews

nick_coatsworth Is nick_coatsworth after a lib seat next election ? Along with his other mates

nick_coatsworth 5+ lockdowns, lives lost to COVID and billions down the drain since AZ is out. Those in medical community who contributed to vaccine hesitancy must be tried for negligence. Academics must lose credentials, journalists must apologise every day until COVID ends. Skin in the game.

nick_coatsworth Old Dr. Young being one person sending hideous wrong messages

nick_coatsworth And it is indeed refreshing that as a Public Servant Nick Coatsworth is not politically compromised .

nick_coatsworth You know what started the undermining of AstraZeneca? A PM that was eligible for AstraZeneca but made sure he got Pfizer instead. auspol MorrisonVaccineCrisis

nick_coatsworth How about honest, hugely qualified ICU specialists, professors of medicine, 60 randomized controlled trials, observational studies showing the efficacy of Ivm(will not complete the word or banned by Twit) against all variants of SAR-CoV-2? Why are we not 'following the science'?

nick_coatsworth This wasn't anything to do with academics.

nick_coatsworth Serves anyone right who has refused vaccination and contracts Covid.

nick_coatsworth Tell that to the dead from AstraZeneca

nick_coatsworth We have been conditioned over the course of this pandemic to be unreasonably afraid of a virus with an IFR of only 1%. It was politicians that did it. Now here is the result home to roost. Large swathes of the population are scared of everything.

nick_coatsworth Lol coatsworth.

nick_coatsworth Geopolitics has undermined the safety of all by they offering inferior products compared to what is available

nick_coatsworth Please respect Australian people lives, some family lost their love ones because the AZ vaccine. Why our government do not assign large resources to identify the cause of AZ blood clots when 4-10 years they spent billions when terrorist killed only 2 or 3 of Australians?

nick_coatsworth Media and labor killed AZ

nick_coatsworth Nice reframe - blaming the crisis on medicos instead of politicians.

nick_coatsworth Scottys in trouble…. Quick let’s roll out coatsworth. Maybe they’ll believe the lies if it’s coming from a dr

nick_coatsworth Why don't you ask the PM why he didn't do the patriotic thing and have an AZ shot in front of the nation instead of jumping a head of everyone to get his Pfizer.

nick_coatsworth Coatesworth is no longer the Deputy CHO.

nick_coatsworth The Morrison Government destroyed confidence in the vaccine rollout a long time ago
