The state’s contact tracers are facing the biggest challenge since the start of the pandemic, as the Delta strain starts to outpace them with a rising number of unlinked cases circulating in the community despite orders from the NSW government to stay home.
Premier Gladys Berejiklian warned “things are going to get worse before they get better”, with 37 of Saturday’s cases out in the community for all or part of their infectious period. “It’s critical that [people] tell the truth the first time,” Dr Chant said. “We know that everyone is human and makes poor decisions at certain times, but don’t compound that initial mistake by not telling us the truth.”Health authorities also revealed that of the 47 COVID-19 patients in the state’s hospitals, 37 had not received a single vaccine dose.“No-one who has received two doses is in hospital, and that’s a key message with this Delta variant,” Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant said.
There are currently more than 350 staff in NSW’s centralised contact tracing team, in addition to those from public health units around the state. The team has more than doubled since May last year. “Their contacts are already infectious by the time the health department knows about it,” Professor Bennett said, adding in that scenario, it didn’t matter how “perfect” contact tracing was.

And with the number of cases exploding tracers are being outnumbered. In other states we lockdown at the get go so the tracers can catch up and we dont let the virus escape. If NSW is gold, everyone else must be platinum standard.
