Perspective: Some believe we have reached a fork in the road in relation to whether we live with COVID-19 or not, but the path forward is clear: enhance our efforts to control community transmission and accelerate vaccine uptake.

Current restrictions are almost certain to be extended beyond July 16, and the public health response to control community transmission can be enhanced. This outbreak can be suppressed.

Children aged 12 and over should be offered vaccination once the Pfizer vaccine receives TGA registration for that age group. Preliminary data from the Sydney outbreak shows the vast majority of COVID cases had not received a single dose of the vaccine, and among the 10 per cent of cases requiring hospitalisation, several are younger adults.

The Australian COVID-19 vaccine roll-out has encountered major obstacles, including a concerted campaign against the AstraZeneca vaccine by some commentators in the medical profession. Nonetheless, we can expect Australia’s vaccination program to rapidly accelerate over the next few months. In hindsight, given some element of ongoing transmission in the Sydney outbreak has involved individuals within healthcare and aged care facilities, mandatory vaccination of staff in those settings should have been adopted. A lack of urgency in regard to COVID-19 vaccination, in part related to Australia’s success with elimination, has been a major issue.

Why did we just let everyone out and back in without first sorting vaccines? How will Australia / New Zealand / Pacific Islands climb up to future world prominence while we “punching bag” blame our own people just so Berejiklian could get foreign money to buy Sydney real estate?

This is obvious. Its exactly what the PM, Premier & CHO have advocated. NSW doesn’t have the vaccination rates to support “ live with COVID ”. Write an editorial on the need to use up our AstraZeneca supplies. We have over 3 million doses on the shelf. It can save lives.

Some believe we have reached a fork in the road in relation to whether we live with COVID-19 or not, but the path forward is clear: enhance our efforts to control community transmission and INCREASE vaccine SUPPLY. Fixed your blurb. Uptake isn’t the issue, supply is. auspol
