Excess deaths, seen as a more precise way of measuring total fatalities from the coronavirus, rose to their highest level in Gauteng since the pandemic began.
Excess deaths in the province, which are measured against a historical average, have risen for seven straight weeks from 229 in the week to May 2, highlighting the severity of a third wave of coronavirus infections. Gauteng, where one in four South Africans live, has in recent days accounted for between 57% to 69% of all daily national infections.
The number of excess deaths in Gauteng compares with a peak of 2,114 in the week to January 10 during the second wave of infections, and 2,172 in the week to July 12 2020, the crest of the first. SA’s official death toll and almost 2-million infections make it the country hardest hit by the virus in Africa, though testing and accurate recording of the causes of death is weak across much of the continent.
