A court orders that Paul Cohrs, 61, be assessed by two medical professionals over whether he can be tried for the shooting death of his mother at her home near Mildura in 2018.

Medical professionals will assess whether the former deputy mayor of a New South Wales council is fit to stand trial over the alleged murder of his mother. Two registered medical practitioners will assess Mr Cohrs' fitness to stand trialPaul Cohrs, 61, is accused of shooting his 81-year-old mother, Bette Cohrs-Schulz, in the chest at her home in Red Cliffs, near Mildura, on October 30, 2018.

Mr Cohrs' case had been set down for a week-long pre-trial hearing but was cut short on Monday after he asked Justice Lesley Taylor if he could be assessed for "mental impairment". Justice Taylor said she was "erring on the side of caution and finding there is a real and sustained question of [Mr Cohrs'] fitness to stand trial".Prosecutors allege Mr Cohrs shot his mother dead in the presence of a small child, hours after he is alleged to have also shot his brother, Raymond, dead at a remote property across the Murray River in New South Wales.
