A new report suggests biosimilar drugs push biologic treatment prices lower

A

Biologics are a class of drugs that are produced by living systems and used in the clinical space to treat a variety of diseases such as cancer, diabetes and many more. Notable examples of biologics include Neulasta, used to help make white blood cells for the body in patients who have undergone chemotherapy. However, the costs of these treatments can often be quite high. A full course of treatment of Neulasta, for example, can cost up to $5,508.

A crucial element to the role of biosimilars, the report found, is that they are not only less expensive than brand name biologics themselves, they also apply competitive pressure to the brand name drugs. The result is that those brand name biologics also keep their prices down.
