A coalition of Latino doctors is teaming up with Univision to host what may be the final mayoral forum of the primary season — and one focused exclusively on health care in the Latino community.
The SOMOS Network — a coalition of 2,500 city-based health care providers of color — will host the event, which is expected to include leading contenders Eric Adams, Maya Wiley, Kathryn Garcia and Andrew Yang. “This past pandemic year has revealed to many what we at SOMOS have long known — our healthcare system has an equity problem and communities of color, especially Latino communities, face the worst health outcomes,” said Henry R. Munoz III, co-founder of SOMOS, in a statement. He added the goal of the forum is to “elevate the issue of health equity and engage Latino voters to support candidates who will make the health of our communities a priority.
The forum will be remote and broadcast in Spanish. It is likely the last chance candidates will have as a group to speak directly to Latinos, who make up roughly 20 percent of the electorate and remain as divided on the mayoral candidates as Democratic voters citywide., found that 22 percent of registered Latino Democrats ranked Adams first, 17 percent ranked Wiley first, 16 percent went for Garcia and 14 percent went for Yang.
Black and brown communities were among the hardest hit by the pandemic and are among the most reluctant to get a vaccine, according to statistics from the federal“As the community doctors who have cared for these families for generations, we know that it is up to us to fight against the persistently inequitable healthcare systems in New York and beyond to ensure our patients have access to quality, culturally competent care,” said Ramon Tallaj, chair and founder of SOMOS.
