A mental health tsunami is brewing among the thousands of affected people in mica-ridden houses, it has been claimed.
Paddy, who is married to Amanda and lives at his home in Carndonagh, Co Donegal, with sons Mark, 21, Reece, 13, and daughter Savannah, said: “It’s about time the Government stepped up now to fix this, it’s not just houses that’s [coming] down. It’s people's mental health that’s down." The total cost is expected to top €1bn to cover the 5,000 homes affected that are primarily in Donegal and Mayo as well as counties Clare, Sligo and Galway.
“But if the Government turn their back on them again or they try to give us another half-assed scheme, the mental health thing is going to go down and they’re going to cause chaos.” Meanwhile, dad-of-four Kieran White has described how his mental health plummeted in recent years as his dream home started to crumble.
“I thought when this 90% scheme came out at the start it sounded good and we’d have got a bit of relief out of that, but when I started getting deeper into the scheme I seemed to be getting deeper into debt.
