The four-page guide answers common questions about Covid-19 vaccines for people with cancer and their caregivers.

from the National National Comprehensive Cancer Network , a non-profit alliance of 31 leading U.S. cancer centers, hopes to help people with cancer and their caregivers who have questions or concerns about Covid-19 vaccines.

The four-page guide recommends that people with cancer get vaccinated against Covid-19 as soon as possible, as they can be at risk of worse outcomes from Covid-19 than the general population. The extent of this risk varies depending on cancer type, whether the person is on active treatment or not and the types of treatments used, but the guide is unequivocal in recommending vaccination for people with cancer and their caregivers and close contacts.

“We know people with cancer are particularly vulnerable to Covid-19, and also that vaccination is a safe way to reduce infection,” said Robert W. Carlson, MD, CEO of NCCN. “We’re happy to provide plainspoken answers for people with cancer and their loved ones that directly address concerns about the Covid-19 vaccines,” added Carlson.

Back in February, when vaccine availability was limited, a group of 130 cancer centers and organizations joined forces toto prioritize people with cancer due to the increased risks of Covid-19 infection. Now vaccines are no longer in short supply in the U.S., the new resource is an up-to-date review of everything that is known so far about people with cancer and Covid-19 vaccination and urges people with cancer to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

“We want to reinforce that the decision to get vaccinated against Covid-19 should be something that isn’t scary or confusing for people with cancer,” said Brahm Segal, MD, Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, Co-Leader of the NCCN Covid-19 Vaccine Advisory Committee.
