THE NUMBER of children who needed treatment for swallowing objects has increased fivefold in the past five years, experts have warned.If a child is choking they will often appear to clutch their throat or chestSpecialists in the UK said that swallowing objects such as buttons and coins can be normal for kids over the age of six months as they learn to explore their environment.
The experts looked at data from five hospitals in the UK and found that coins were the most common item swallowed followed by magnets and button batteries. The experts said that while single magnets usually don't require removal, several swallowed magnets have the potential to cause intestinal tissue death and perforation.
