Medical journalist June Shannon has been renting in south Dublin for 16 years, and says that between rent and childcare costs, saving for a house is 'impossible'

She has been renting in Dalkey in south Dublin for the last 16 years, and she and her husband pay €1,400 a month.

Now aged 49, Ms Shannon says she is no longer frustrated at not being able to afford a house, she is now just worried. "The money we may have had for a deposit went on that treatment... Now I'm getting older and retirement is in 15 years, I'm thinking I won't be able to afford the rent when I'm on the pension.''"For me, I think our story is a sign of the failures of a number of policies by successive governments - lack of childcare support, no funding for fertility treatment.""There are lots of people in this situation", she said.

With housing now back on the political agenda, Ms Shannon says it's a sense of Déjà vu, and she has heard the political back and forth all before.

People at the end of the day voted to keep June & 1000's & 1000's of others in that position, well maybe not quite, a hopeful change took place in the last election which was quickly snuffed out by FF/FG/Green's, parties who put June in the position & intend to keep her there.

The elephant in the room is we are importing this phenomenon. The highest earners in Ireland are not Irish, and time and time again we see this same old story featuring an Irish person who has been priced out of competing with these highly skilled foreigners. Nobody's fault.

It's the same in Australia for people making a start in life

Where are they renting in South dublin for €1400 ?

In the US, same will happen in Ireland, Lumber prices have skyrocketed in the last year. The number of homes you can build with $50k worth of lumber: May 2020: 10 houses May 2021: 2 houses

And guess what, this is 'news' to RTE. A hive of landlords, chin wagging on the plight of others, lol !

It's amazing this country hadn't a pot to piss in, 20s up to 70s we could build home's, the problem is they will build home's in wrong areas, bad planning etc look around the city some are no go area's! Small apartments not for families?

Spot on June you hit the nail on the head. Governments circular arguments year in year out re: housing frustrating.

At 49 taking out a mortgage!!!
