An independent panel says to prevent another global pandemic the world needs international health inspectors with powers like those of weapons inspectors. Scott Morrison made the same recommendation over a year ago, writes Peter Hartcher | OPINION

An independent global expert panel says that if the world wants to prevent another pandemic, it needs international health inspectors with powers like those of international weapons inspectors.Beijing damned him for it as an impertinent interference in its internal affairs, so it’s too hot for the independent panel to use the same language.AP

“Do we want to learn the lessons of the pandemic, or shrug our shoulders and say, ‘Oh well,’ and blunder on?” poses the co-chair of the panel, former New Zealand prime minister Helen Clark. A better surveillance system is essential, the panel finds. The World Health Organisation’s infection experts must be given standing, multi-re-entry visas to allow them to travel anywhere without delay, it urges. And they should have the power to declare outbreaks of new diseases without the permission of the host country.

Oh Peter. Getting a bit desperate now trying to vindicate your poor embattled Prime Minster. Despite him opportunistically calling a pandemic before WHO Morrison then spent the next 14 months ignoring the reality.

Didn’t the report say all countries failed. Australia left borders open to the US when most cases were coming from the US while closing borders to countries generating fewer cases. Politicising pandemics will make us vulnerable.

Hey Peter don’t start talking up Scomo now you haven’t since he won the election

We are in a global pandemic that was not foreseen so how can we prevent 'another' one Weapons inspectors seem to make little difference in this world so far so how would international health inspectors make a difference?
