Mental health services will receive an extra $2.3 billion in tonight's federal budget, with the bulk of the funding going to treatment centres and suicide prevention efforts.Of the funds, about $298 million will go to suicide prevention, and a further $107 million towards vulnerable Australians
Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said the government would be rolling out "record commitments on essential services, disability support, mental health, aged care and women's safety". Almost $249 million is being promised to help create digital mental health services, allowing counselling and support online, while $202 million is for training nurses and psychologists working in mental health.
The funds announced today will be spent over the next four years, with the federal government describing it as its initial response to the Productivity Commission's inquiry into the mental health sector, which was presented to the government in June last year.ahead of the budget, with the pandemic and recent natural disasters prompting a surge in demand.
great 🙄 so 'create digital mental health services'... which we already have & are no substitute for in-person support & more Headspace facilities... fixed
Will that overcome the incredible shortfall in mental health accommodation the VIC public service failed to warn our government about. Because of that for almost a decade Vic public housing has been swanped with people who should be in 24hr care. Others on lists ignored.
Digital services is good for people with chronic illnesses. Would be interested to see what they’re doing to provide more disability support too. Every budget we seem to be skipped over, or it just becomes harder to get any disability support.
But, will that include new facilities to accommodate those that require, need, live in, long term help. Not everyone can do it alone. Not everyone has someone by their side. Not everyone's mental health is a simple fix with medication.
* In the 90 year forward estimates
Good news yet I bet not a single dollar will go towards assisting those with serious mental health issues to gain NDIS assistance. PTSD
