Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. clarified on Wednesday, March 31, that a Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) Identification Number or PIN is not a mandatory requirement for individuals before they can get a coronavirus disease (COVID-19) vaccine.

Galvez, vaccine czar and chief implementer of the National Task Force Against COVID-19, said any identification card number, whether government or company-issued, will suffice to validate a resident’s identity when registering for vaccination. Some local government units have started the simultaneous vaccination of senior citizens and persons with comorbidities along the frontline health workers to speed up the country’s vaccination program.

In doing so, LGUs have launched pre-registration and pre-screening processes to determine who among those wanting to get the vaccine are eligible in the prioirity list of the government. But PhilHealth announced on Tuesday that a PhilHealth Identification Number was required for the pre-registration process.

PhilHealth Director Dante Gierran, in a “Laging Handa” press briefing Wednesday, retracted the statement and said that a PIN is only required if PhilHealth beneficiaries who got vaccinated are claiming benefits in case they experience adverse effects.Meanwhile, Galvez said the government is also expediting the processing and issuance of a Philippine Identification System national ID which can be used in the government’s vaccination program.
