Proper staff training crucial to avoid a COVID outbreak at Howard Springs, expert says

An Australian epidemiologist says proper staff training will be crucial to avoiding a COVID-outbreak in the expanded quarantine facility at Howard Springs. The Northern Territory Government this week announced capacity at the facility will more than double over the next three months, with 1,000 overseas Australians to quarantine at the facility each week.

Professor Catherine Bennett says the facility has a good safety record, but an influx of new staff will pose risks. "The important thing here will be that there's a proper training program put in place and they may well have people who've been trained up well and are very experienced now, but the challenge is how do you train up quite quickly new staff and maintain a really good quality assurance program around infection control."
