Treasurer Josh Frydenberg has celebrated the national accounts released today – saying the figures indicate Australia’s “performance on the health and economic front is world-leading”. Australia's economy has increased by 3.1 per cent over the December quarter, above economists' projections of 2.3 per cent, while GDP figures for 2020 showed a decrease of 1.1 per cent, down from federal budget projections of five per cent.
“This is a very encouraging performance from the Australian economy, given the economic abyss that we were staring into at the peak of this crisis. The treasurer also applauded the response of the private sector following the winding back of federal pandemic support measures. “What is particularly pleasing in today's numbers is that as our emergency support is tapering off, the private sector is stepping up,” he said. “The Australian economy begins 2021 in a very strong position.
