has been transferred to a second London hospital where he will be treated for an infection and pre-existing heart condition, Buckingham Palace confirmed Monday.The 99-year-old Duke was taken in an ambulance from King Edward VIII hospital in Central London St Bartholomew’s Hospital for further treatment, in a cloak and dagger operation.

In a statement released just before noon local time the palace said that “the Duke remains comfortable and is responding to treatment but is expected to remain in hospital until at least the end of the week.” While aides are keen to downplay any sense of alarm, the news that the Duke has been transferred to another hospital is concerning given the Duke’s age—Prince Philip turns 100 in June. When he was admitted to hospital on February 16 he was driven by car and walked into the hospital unaided. Palace aides said he was admitted after falling ill as a precaution and he was expected to be discharged within a matter of days.

Palace sources have said there will not be a running commentary about the Duke’s condition, though there have been a handful of updates. It had been hoped he would be discharged and taken straight to Windsor Castle where the Queen is in residence to recuperate, but he is expected to remain at St Bart’s until at least the end of the week. St Bart’s is renowned for it’s cancer and cardiovascular care and has Europe’s largest cardiovascular service. The Duke has a history of heart problems.

While there is concern, given the Duke’s age, the royal family is continuing to carry out engagements which suggest Philip’s condition is stable. The Queen carried out an important video call last week with health workers in a move to encourage Britons to have the Covid vaccine, while
